Barry has been practicing Southeast Asian martial arts since 1987. He began studying Pekiti-Tirsia Kali with Tuhon Bill McGrath and Guro A.K. Bouracca until 1995. In 1997 he traveled to the Philippines to take part in the Kali mastery training camp hosted by Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje. This included training with the Philippine Marine Corp Force Recon Battalion and competing in no holds barred full contact stick fighting matches. Barry has been a student and instructor under Grand Tuhon Gaje and Maginoo Tim Waid since that time.

He has also studied Indonesian Silat under Sidi Abdul Haqq and is currently a Cikgu Muda in Malaysian Silat Kuntau Tekpi under Guro Omar Hakim. Barry was also fortunate to train with legendary Boxing coach Dominic Amoroso. He continues to study combative unarmed and weapon fighting systems from Eastern and Western traditions.

“During my travels as a musician the first thing I’d do upon arriving in any town was to find a gym to train at during my stay. Not unlike musicians, Martial Artists have a camaraderie based on a respect for what we put ourselves through to acquire skill and knowledge. That being said, I’ve gotten to train with Master Toddy, Guro Dan Inosanto, Guro Bob Breen, ArjanThom Harinck, Guro Phil Gelinas...So many great teachers most of whom never charged me a dime to come and work out. It’s a constant reminder of how much there is to learn and that the training never stops!”

“I love the reality of it...seeing what works and what doesn’t. Not in a theoretical sense but by testing everything in a combative situation. You put some gear on so no one gets seriously hurt but you have at it and find out if you can make things work. Not in a fixed drill but in an organic-live situation. To use a music analogy, you can practice all you want but sooner or later you have to play and that is where the truth lies...in doing it!!”

Most of the guys that I’ve met that are the most formidable fighters are also the most humble. The warrior ethic of Chivalry. Only using your skills to protect yourself, loved ones and to defend the helpless, this is something I believe in. It’s not a coincidence that most of the great warriors of the past were also poets, musician and deeply spiritual people.

These teachings along with the training could be a powerful antidote to the violence we see in our youth.” Grand Tuhon Gaje says that one on the meanings of the triangle is: Spiritual Man-Warrior-Healer. those three things in harmony. Ultimately, Martial Arts is a vehicle to conquering yourself and discovering yourself.
